CORE PASSAGE: Acts 9:15
Ananias’ name means “God is gracious.” He was a Christian believer living in Damascus at the time of Saul’s encounter with Jesus on the road. In a vision, the Lord told Ananias to go to Saul. Ananias knew that Saul of Tarsus was an enemy of the Christians, but God reassured him and explained that Saul had been specially chosen to be a messenger of the gospel. God also told Ananias that Saul would suffer for His name’s sake (Acts 9:13-16). Ananias went to Saul, greeted him as a brother, laid hands on him, and explained the meaning of what had happened to him on the road to Damascus. Saul’s sight was miraculously restored, and he was baptized (Acts 22:12-16).
